Announcing our new exhibition - Book Scents by DongXing Huang.
Huang is a Chinese Artist and this exhibition is his (书香) Book Scents series of oil paintings.
Although the word "书香" in Chinese was direct refers to the scents of books, as time goes on, people also use it as a praised adjective for someone is come from a scholarly family background.
Until 2,000 years ago, papermaking in ancient China was just invented and still can not be mass-produced, books as the intermedium of knowledge were too expensive to have for common people. Therefore, private school education was particularly for the noble and higher. These days, Chinese culture still highly respects scholars.
At the moment electronic books are more convenient than analog books for passing information, and people are gradually accustomed to ebooks. Meanwhile, there are people who still enjoy reading from paper books, maybe the texture, maybe the scents, or any other reasons.
Technology is changing people's way of living, analog books things exist and disappear for a reason, but that does not mean they are not worth appreciating.
The exhibition will be on view from November 8th - November 20th, 2022, with an opening reception on Wednesday, November 9th, 6 - 8:30 pm.
