Sojourner Gallery is pleased to announce THE COLOR BLUE, a solo exhibition of the artist Tom Judd, featuring 12 of his divers and birds series. Displaying Judd’s two representative series and carefully rearranging them, this exhibition intends to present the common color, blue, in the background of sky and water. It is not only an environmental connection but also emotional engagement.

Unlike Picasso’s blue period, Tom Judd does not apply much blue tone and color to every canvas, instead, he expressed the atmosphere and mood in blue, a more generic blue. To the viewers, the blue can be more than a color. The exhibition invites viewers to discover what “blue” means to them – a moment, a melody, an emotion, a glance at the past, or a glimpse into the future?

 

The divers and birds series also represent memories from the summers. Through the visual elements of divers in motion and steadily standing birds, Tom delivers his farewell to youth. His works captured the days when everything was fresh and exciting, meanwhile, celebrated the days when matureness and nostalgia has brought us calm and peace. The “blue” as the background of skies and oceans, is no longer necessarily the sorrow of the past youth and energy, it seems like a quiet mentor looking at us and whispering with wise messages.

Tom Judd (b. 1952) first exhibited his artwork at the Philadelphia Museum of Art in 1979, where at 25 he was included in a survey show entitled Contemporary Drawing: Philadelphia curated by Ann Percy and Frank Goodyear. The museum purchased a work from that exhibit for their permanent collection.

 

Judd has gone on to exhibit his work in distinguished commercial galleries and Museums across the country. He is in major collections, including the Philadelphia Museum of Art, The Pennsylvania Academy of Art, and the Birmingham Museum of Art.

 

Judd works in a variety of media including painting, collage, photography, and installation work. This includes major public art projects such as the Independence Hall subway station in Philadelphia.

Wenlu Bao (b. 1987) is a curator, creative writer, and documentary video maker. Her exposure to hundreds of art museums and galleries globally enriches her view on contemporary curatorial practices and research. Wenlu received her M.A. degree in Museum Communication from the University of the Arts in Philadelphia, and a B.A. degree in Video Directing from Fudan University, Shanghai Institute of Visual Art. She received a 2016 Annual Meeting Fellowship supported by the American Alliance of Museums, a 2016 Marketing and Communications Intern Fellowship supported by the Richard C. von Hess Foundation, and a 2017 Highest Academic Achievement Award from the University of the Arts, Museum Studies Department.
