Sojourner Gallery is pleased to announce Scenarized Scenery, a solo exhibition of Philadelphia-based artist Chenlin Cai, featuring his newest body of paintings completed over the last two years. Cai synthesizes the medium of oil painting with traditional Chinese ink painting, using the formal language of contemporary painting to draw images on the surface of transparent materials. He creates visual narration about relationships between our environment and us, historical moments and contemporary events. He visually expresses the effects of catastrophic events on the human body in a beautiful and poetic way.
He uses special techniques to dilute the oil paint to create a unique texture to mimic the biologically cellular structure under the microscopic perspective. In his paintings, the fusion of microscopic organic structure and macroscopic natural landscape show a unique and novel way of viewing through the dislocation and overlap of transparent materials. This artistic form trans-forms the biological images as a social metaphor.
Cai brings a different visual experience for viewers to ponder the questions about the con-sequences of human behavior in a wider time-space continuum.
The exhibition will be on view September 27 - October 20, 2019, with an opening reception on Friday, September 27, 6 to 8 pm. Please join us in celebrating Chenlin Cai's fourth solo exhibition in U.S. For additional information or sales inquiries, please contact newyork@timeartsus.com.
Chenlin Cai (b. 1984, Fujian, China) is a visual artist who lives and works in Philadelphia. Cai received his MFA from two of the renowned universities in fine arts. The Tsinghua University in China and The Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts in Philadelphia.
Cai immerses his works in the conflict of these two different art cultures, and the art environments did the opposite. He made no compromise; following only his instinct and vision, combining the best of his traditional training as a classical artist and his unorthodox use of paint on non-traditional materials and surfaces, experimenting with multi-media expression.
Cai had successfully created his unique painting style using cellular structure oil painting texture, X-ray collage, and inside-bottle painting craft to interpret landscape. The unique artistic style and techniques of his work have made his works collected by many Chinese, American and Greece collectors including the Copelouzos Family Art Museum of Contemporary Arts in Athens, Greece, and the FMC Corporation in Philadelphia. Scenarized Scenery is his fourth solo exhibition in U.S. For more information, please visit caichenlin.com
