Crazy Quilt 1, 2016,  acrylic on canvas,  34 1/4 x 47 in.

Brilliant and subtle, playful and rigorous, the paintings of Kirby Grimes are tightly constructed visual languages. They sit between order and randomness, between calculated geometric compositions and impulsive stains of color. If asked about the meaning behind his works, Grimes will tell you, with a monk-like instinct for self-effacement, that his own intention is irrelevant.

Trains as an architect and known for his elegantly thoughtful houses across New York, Connecticut, North Carolina, Virginia, and California, Grimes has always worked to balance visual proportion with spatial necessity. He has a brutally discerning eye and a restless drive to pursue problems of perception and experience.

The paintings on exhibition are examples of Kirby Grimes’ works from the last five years. The exhibition is curated by Yingxi Lucy Gong. Receptions take place at Sojourner Gallery on November 10 and 17, 6 - 8pm. Please join us in celebrating Kirby Grimes' first solo exhibition in New York.
